TeamWORKS
Join a team where each team’s members will be responsible to not only learn about each other in an effort to work together, but also to love each other as Christ’s body functions in unison.
About TeamWORKS
Covell Community Church, under the authority of Holy Scripture, has designed and developed this program to meet the needs of the local church, its surrounding communities, and its designated missions and missionaries through the utilization of the church’s God-given talents and spiritual gifts. Though the word teamwork (which is defined as a “cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of a group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause”) does not appear in the Word of God, there is sufficient, Scriptural information about Christians working together for the common God-centered cause. When one receives Christ, the born-again Christian, according to John 14:15-23 and John 17, is joined and unified with the triune God, where the believer is guided by the Holy Spirit (1 John 2:27); provided for and purified by the Great High Priest, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:19-22); and loved by our Holy God, who then teaches us how to love others (1 John 4:7-21). From the creation of the world (Genesis 1:1-3), we find the triune Godhead working in perfect concert at creation. This unified work of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit was next extended to Adam and Eve, where the first human team was comprised to function together and complement each other in the image of Almighty God (Genesis 1:26-27). From here, a family dynamic was introduced and a united approach to work as a team was instituted. The team dynamic found in a family quickly translated into the same kind of function within the people of the Jewish faith. For example, in Exodus 18:1-27, we find Moses choosing teams of individuals to govern Israel’s affairs while increasing the effectiveness among God’s people. In the book of Nehemiah, we read about a total team effort in the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls, and Jesus’ twelve-man team that was denoted for its diversity (Mark 3:13-19; Luke 6:12-16) within its unity consisted of a tax collector, fisherman, political activist, and an opportunist. This God-ordained, twelve-person team spent 3 ½ years of intense training under Jesus’ teaching, only to be sent out as two-man teams to accomplish the great purpose that was laid out by Christ Jesus (Mark 6:7-13). Together, under the Triune leadership of our Lord and Savior, this team of disciples was given the Great Commission to love, serve, give, and evangelize the world (Matthew 5:43-6:4, 28:18-20; John 13:12-17). That Spirit-led Commission was carried out in the early chapters of Acts by the first church in a New Testament example of teamwork and togetherness that was performed in the name and power of their Lord and Savior. As evidenced throughout Scripture, we are offered clear insight into the importance of teamwork and togetherness.
As Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (ESV) tells us,
“9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! 11 Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? 12 And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
Paul said in Ephesians 4:16 (ESV) “ from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” This body, known as Christ’s Holy Church, is described by Paul in great detail in Romans 12:3-8 and 1 Corinthians 12.
These Scriptural examples of togetherness and teamwork lay out how saved man fulfills God’s defined tasks through His chosen people’s works. These works are not the means by which we’ve been saved, but rather they are the results from one who has been saved by God’s gifts of grace and faith (Romans 11:5-6; Ephesians 2:8-9). It was James who said in James 2:26 “for as the body apart from the Spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead” and it is this verse that reminds believers of their God-given faith and their God-centered works. Hence, the Covell Community Church TeamWORKS program consists of repentant, faithful believers who have been redeemed, justified, sanctified, and joined with Christ and His Body as members of His local church. As appropriately-aged members of Covell Community Church, each prospective team member must prayerfully and Scripturally consider his or her Spiritual gifts and God-given talents and assess through honest counsel offered by Covell Community Church Elders, Deacons, Deaconesses, and fellow members how they might be utilized to serve the body of Christ. As with any successful team and as Scripture clearly indicates, the success of the team and its quality of service will depend on each member’s humility and selflessness that is exemplified by Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:1-11). In addition, open communication will be expected among “team members” as they grow together to serve their fellow man and strengthen the church in the area of interest and attribution that God has gifted them. The communication among “team members” will at times be critical, but must always be edifying, educational, truthful, and respectful. Thus, “team members” will work together with their teammates unselfishly while communicating openly and serving Christ’s body faithfully. Through these works, “team members” will assuredly experience personal spiritual growth and the deepening of one’s faith, a better realization and appreciation of one’s God-given talents and skills, a greater concern for the body of Christ and its members, and the opportunity to give God glory as each team works together to carry out His ministry.
The Goal of TeamWORKS
Each team’s members will be responsible to not only learn about each other in an effort to work together, but also to love each other as Christ’s body functions in unison. Teams will be called to service by Covell Community Church Elders and will be overseen by its Deacons and Deaconesses and will be entrusted to conduct themselves responsibly in all Spiritual, social, and financial matters as laid out in God’s Word and the Tenets of Covell Community Church’s Doctrine.
It will be the goal of the Elders, Deacons, and Deaconesses to direct prospective “team members” to the team that best fits their talents and promotes their spiritual growth while glorifying God and serving His church. In a true team environment, there is freedom to develop one’s gifts and abilities as the Holy Spirit leads and directs, while also understanding that mistakes will be made and forgiveness will be freely given. In addition, there will be an environment where each team’s members feel loved, supported, and led by the Word of God; and it is the hope of Covell Community Church that its TeamWORKS program will fulfill the will of God and perform the works that are wrought by saved man (Hebrews 10:24-25). We are reminded of the wise words of Dwight L. Moody, who once said, “that he would rather put a thousand men to work than do the work of a thousand men.”
